cats drink milk

Most of us grew up watching Tom & Jerry in which Tom gleefully sips a bowl of milk. Many cartoons and movies also showed us the stereotype of cats drinking milk and waiting for the milkman to arrive.

Is it true to such stereotypes? Can cats truly drink milk or is it just an effect of mass media?

Let’s break down the facts in this article where we explore facts about milk and cats. If you want to know if it’s safe to feed your cat milk, and what type of milk you should give them, read on below to find out more.

Is milk safe for cats?

Yes, cats can safely drink milk, but with caution. Vets usually don’t want your cat to become dependent on milk alone, even if they love drinking milk from the bowl. Why is that?

Milk is made with lactose, which your cat’s tummy cannot digest, unlike with human stomachs. Some cats are good with different kinds of milk but some aren’t. If you have a mixed breed or a stray cat, they might do well with any kind of milk but with purebreds, you might have a problem.

To test if your cat is okay with milk, give them only 1 tbsp. at a time and if they aren’t getting tummy aches, it’s probably safe for them. Although your cat may like milk, it’s still not that much of a nutritional value. It is safe to feed, but it won’t benefit your cat nutritionally.

Underweight cats might benefit from milk because of the high-fat content. However, too much milk is not that ideal for your cat. Nonetheless, you may find your cat reacting positively to milk. Here’s what experts concluded in their research about cats and milk: cats get relaxed by drinking milk.

With that said, there are more ways to help calm your cat down other than drinking milk, so it’s not a good training habit to depend on all the time.

Lactose and cats explained

So, you might wonder, what’s lactose? Well, it’s a type of sweetener that’s naturally found in dairy products, which includes milk. Cats cannot digest lactose unlike humans, which is why your cat may get a bad tummy ache if they keep ingesting milk.

However, kittens are a whole different story, as they can somewhat digest lactose. Regardless, regular milk usually doesn’t contain any kind of nutrient that’s beneficial to cats at all. Moreover, after the weaning stage, kittens can no longer properly digest lactose.

When your kitten turns into an adult, they might experience stomach problems, vomiting, loose stools, and whatnot due to drinking milk or other similar dairy products. Aside from that, milk may affect the quality of nutrients that were obtained from other foods.

In short, milk isn’t ideal for cats, when you look from a medical standpoint. However, some owners have been feeding their cat milk and they handle it just fine – not all cats are the same.

In some cases, cats could develop food allergies. One of these food allergies includes lactose, as well as casein – a type of milk protein. You’ll easily spot when your cat is allergic to milk when they develop redness on the skin.

If your vet diagnosed your cat as being allergic to lactose and casein, by all means, avoid feeding your cat milk! Look for other alternatives instead.

Which milk is safe for cats to drink?

Although we still believe that milk isn’t essential to a cat’s nutrition, if you still want to go ahead and give them milk, there are safer alternatives. Fortunately, there are various types of milk out there, whether natural or processed.

Many companies have started developing special types of milk that might just be okay for your feline friend. However, with the overwhelming types of milk, you might not know which type is okay for your pet.

Our general rule is to not feed them with milk that is plant-based since cats are naturally carnivorous in the wild. We also don’t like them to have too much sugar so we advise against sweetened milk formulas. Here’s a list of cat-safe milk:

1. Milk substitute formula

Okay, this might not be technically a milk type, but many companies are already recommending it. Cat-Sip is one of them, which is a type of low-fat milk that was specifically formulated for cats.

Due to the inclusion of taurine, it is a good supplement for kittens and cats alike. Since it is almost entirely lactose-free, it is generally safe for cats to digest.

2. Lactose-free cow’s milk

Cow’s milk is the easiest milk to access in the market. However, since many humans are lactose intolerant, many companies have started developing such formulas that do not have lactose in them. These formulas are safe for your cat.

3. Low-fat skim milk

If you’re a fan of skim milk, it’s safe for cats as well, so long as the fat content is very low, preferably at 1% (much like Cat-Sip mentioned above). What we don’t want for your cat is to take in too much sugar and fats from milk so that they live healthier. Never give your cat cream-based milk.

4. Unpasteurized cow’s milk

Some pet owners might be tempted to give their cat raw cow’s milk, but you have to be careful. Make sure that the cow’s milk is not pasteurized.

Cow’s unpasteurized milk will cause fewer adverse effects to your cat as compared to pasteurized types. Raw milk has natural enzymes that break down lactose so your cat can easily digest it (as they have no mechanism to digest lactose on their own).

5. Goat milk

Much like cow’s milk, goat milk is also okay for your cat when fed properly and in small amounts. Again, make sure it is raw and unpasteurized as your cat cannot digest anything with lactose in it (and it should have enzymes).

When you compare goat milk to cow’s milk, the former has lower lactose levels, which is good news for your cat. Aside from that, taurine and other important vitamins and minerals can be found on goat’s milk in a much higher amount when compared with cow’s milk.

6. Queen’s milk

This might be a bit too obvious, but this also counts as milk that cats (kittens) can have. A queen’s (mother cat)’s milk contains all the nutrients that are needed by her kittens to grow, especially taurine.

Taurine is not only good for your cat’s eyes – but it’s also important to keep them strong against diseases, to keep their tummy in check, for their heart health, and healthy breeding (in case).

Arginine, on the other hand, is important for kittens in preventing cataracts and stunted growth. It also keeps their appetite at the right level.

Which milk is not safe for cats to drink?

Now that we’ve talked about which kind of milk can cats drinks, what milk should your cat avoid? Here are some of them:

1. Soy milk

Although soy milk has been a craze nowadays due to its health benefits to humans, soy milk should not be given to your feline friends. The most obvious reason is that soy is plant-based and anything plant-based doesn’t go with a naturally carnivorous animal.

Soy also contains carbohydrates, which cannot be naturally digested by a cat’s tummy. That’s also why cats aren’t designed to take in anything that comes from a plant. Aside from that, certain cats could have soy allergies, so make sure you ask your breeder about their history.

2. Almond milk

Nut-based kinds of milk such as almond milk are also a no-no to your cat. Even though almond milk is lactose-free and is low on calories, some cats could get pancreatitis due to the oils found in almond nuts.

Even though you like almond milk because you want a chance to slim down due to its lower amount of calories, almond milk is not a good idea for cats!

3. Milk with sweeteners

Any milk that has been given added sugars or artificial sweeteners, such as condensed and evaporated milk, is not healthy for your cat. That’s because not only do these milk products have indigestible carbohydrates for your cat, but they’re also too sweet that your cat could become more prone to diabetes.

4. Coconut milk

Much like almond and soy milk, coconut milk should also be out of the list of safe products for your cat. That’s because coconut milk is also plant-based and has a ton of oils, which aren’t good for your feline friend. However, when it comes to coconut products, coconut oil is known to be safe for cats as advised by vets.

Can kittens drink milk?

Except for their mother’s milk, the short answer is no because kittens already get the nutrients that they need from the queen’s milk.

However, you can give them kitten milk replacer in case the following situation happens:

  • the kitten’s mother is nowhere to be found
  • the mother refuses to nurse or cannot nurse the kitten
  • the kitten isn’t getting enough milk from its mother

There are many kitten milk replacers available in the market. Just to be sure, talk to your vet on what’s the best brand or formulation for your kitten depending on their situation and physical health.

Perhaps you’re thinking of adopting or purchasing a new feline companion and have it narrowed down to British Shorthair and Main Coon Cat Breed.

If you are interested in learning more about these two, I hope it guides you in choosing the best fit for your family and or yourself.

Characteristics

Maine Coon

Maine coons undeniably have thick, shaggy fur with a mane around their neck resembling that of a lion.

They have large, muscular frames with large ears and paws, both of which are characterized by tufts of hair pointing outwards. Some would say the ears On a Maine Coon resemble that of a lynx.

There are over seventy-four colors ranging from black to orange in which to choose from.

The Maine Coon cat is the official state cat of Maine in the United States. It is considered one of the largest breeds of domesticated cats in the world. This breed’s origin is a mystery.

However, there is a common theory that this large breed results from the crossbreeding of domestic cats with the wild bobcat, which may explain the resemblance of their ears.

In which, the most probable one is that this breed is related to the Siberian and the Norwegian Forest Cat.

The Maine Coon cat was very popular in cat shows during the 19th century but was soon threatened by the existence of long-haired cats in the 20th century.

These cats made a huge comeback soon after and were recognized by the CFA as an official breed in 1973, and are one of the United States most popular breeds to date.

History Of The British Shorthair

Looking at these cats, you will notice their medium build characterized by round features, consisting of rounded paws, a rounded tipped tail, round eyes, and a round head.

Their coats are dense and plush and come in many colors, with greyish-blue being the most popular.

The origins of the British Shorthair date back to the first century. Romans imported these cats from Egypt to keep their camps clean from mice and other rodents.

These cats cross-bred with Europe’s feral cats, and developed into a larger breed with a thicker fur to better withstand the elements of their new home. This breed is among one of the most popular in the United Kingdom.

Personality

Maine Coon

Maine Coon cats have a high energy level, love to play, and need lots of space in which to do so. They get bored easily, and therefore need lots of mental and physical stimulation to keep them from getting into trouble.

These cats are very social animals and dislike being alone for extended periods. They would do well with a companion to keep them happy and play with.

They are known as a gentle breed with a high level of intelligence, making them excellent problem solvers and easy to train.

They are vocal cats and will let you know when they want something by meowing, chirping, and even howling. Many of these cats enjoy being around water and would benefit from a water fountain.

British Shorthair

Unlike the Maine Coon, the British Shorthair has a low energy level. They are easygoing and are content basking in the sun rather than chasing everything that moves.

Boredom does not seem to affect this breed. They do well by themselves and will often wait close to the door for their owners’ arrival.

British Shorthair cats are mellow and tend to be very loyal to their owners. They get along well with children and other animals.

These cats are not as active as other breeds and would prefer to sit by their owner’s feet rather than on their lap.

They don’t mind spending time on their own for extended periods and are very welcoming to their owners when they arrive home.

Weight and Size

Maine Coon

A male Maine Coon can weigh between thirteen to eighteen pounds, while a female usually weighs anywhere between eight and twelve pounds.

There is a similarity in the weight of the Maine Coon and the British Shorthair, but the Maine Coon can reach a height of over sixteen inches, whereas the British Shorthair will usually reach fourteen inches.

The length of a Maine Coons body can range from nineteen to thirty-two inches.

British Shorthair

The British Shorthair will reach a weight of nine to seventeen pounds for the males, with the females averaging between seven and twelve pounds.

The body length of a British Shorthair can range from twenty-two to twenty-five inches.

Health Conditions

British Shorthair

This breed has a life expectancy of fourteen years but can live for as long as twenty depending on its health. Like other breeds, they are prone to a couple of health conditions.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Responsible for the decrease in the heart’s efficiency due to the walls of the heart thickening.

Cats may have this condition without displaying symptoms initially, while others may show signs such as open-mouthed breathing and lethargy as the disease progresses.

There is no known cure for this condition, which is why genetic testing is so important. Treatment to prolong the quality of life is usually done with medication.

Polycystic kidney disease

Another genetic disease, characterized by many fluid-filled cysts present in the kidneys, eventually leading to their failure to function.

Symptoms can include a large abdomen, bloody urine, and lethargy. There is no cure for this disease and is treated with the use of medications.

Maine Coon

The Maine Coon is known as a healthy breed with a lifespan of nine to fifteen years. This depends on diet and health conditions they may acquire.

Just like the British Shorthair, they may be genetically predisposed to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and polycystic kidney disease.

Although these conditions are rare, they are not without possibility. Spinal muscular atrophy is also another possible genetically inherited disease among Maine Coons.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Characterized by the loss of motor neurons within the brain, leading to atrophy of muscles in the back legs.

Symptoms can include an unsteady gait, restlessness, and dragging the hind legs as the disease progresses. There is no treatment or cure for this condition which is why genetic testing is so important.

How to take care of Maine Coon and British Shorthair?

Grooming

The Maine Coon has ample, shaggy-looking fur with three layers if you include the thick undercoat and guard hairs. These cats shed often and need to be brushed at least once or twice a week. Maine Coons can be any color.

Meanwhile, the coat on the British Shorthair has a thick, rich appearance. There is no undercoat, giving it a soft texture, with a ripple-like appearance. They are available in many colors and patterns, with the most common being solid grey, otherwise referred to as British Blue.

Final Thought

Either of these breeds would make an outstanding companion to your family. The British Shorthair would make a wonderful pet for those who are always on the go and are away from home, as they do not mind being left alone for short periods.

The Maine Coon would benefit to a family or individual who can devote more time at home. Even though this breed is independent, they appreciate being around people and other animals.

Really though, it’s a preference and I’m sure whichever you decide will be best for you and your family.

You might think that all shorthair cats have the same qualities. However, that’s not the case, and it can be downright perplexing when deciphering between certain breeds.

Adding to that perplexity is the domestic shorthair, which is your typical cat developed by mixed ancestry, not recognised by any major breed registry and not to be confused with the American or British Shorthair.

So then, what sets these two breeds apart from one another?… read on to discover.

Characteristics and Origins

American Shorthair

  • Characteristics:

An American Shorthair has a thick and compact coat. With an undercoat, their coats will become denser during the winter months for warmth, and come in over eighty colors.

They are not as soft as the British Shorthair. These cats have a medium to large muscular build, round face and ears, and wide-set eyes in colors of blue, green, and shades of gold.

  • Origins:

The American Shorthair cat is thought to have evolved from Europe when they were brought to North America by early settlers. They used these cats on the ships to protect cargo from rodents.

When these ships reached land, many of these cats crossbred, developing additional features to help them acclimatize and survive the ways of their new land.

American Shorthair – Wikipedia

British Shorthair

  • Characteristics:

Like the American Shorthair, the British Shorthair also has a thick coat in colors ranging from solid shades of grey, white, black, cream, and red to cinnamon and tabby colors.

They have no undercoat, lending to a luxuriously soft texture, with a ripple-like appearance. The British Shorthair is larger in build than its counterpart and has round features such as its head, eyes, ears, and face.

  • Origins:

The British Shorthair cats were also used for controlling the rodent population when they were imported from Egypt by the Romans in an effort to keep their camps clean from vermin.

These cats cross bred with Europe’s feral cats and developed into a larger breed with a thicker fur to better withstand the elements of their new home.

British Shorthair – Wikipedia

Personality

British Shorthair

British Shorthair cats are a mellow, easy-go-lucky breed. They are very loyal to their owners and get along well with children and other animals.

These cats are not as active as other breeds and would prefer to sit by their owner’s feet rather than on their lap.

They don’t mind spending time on their own for extended periods and are very welcoming to their owners when they arrive home.

American Shorthair

Like the British Shorthair, the American Shorthair cats are also mellow, easygoing, and don’t mind being left alone.

They will form bonds with more than just one family member and have a high level of tolerance, making them a perfect pet for those who have children.

They would also make a wonderful companion for single people or those who have to leave their homes for short periods of time, as they don’t require constant attention.

This breed has a higher level of energy and tolerance, making them a great pet for those who have children.

Size and Weight

British Shorthair

The British Shorthair is a well-built, stocky-looking cat with a vast chest and thick legs. These cats don’t reach their full development until the age of three, which is slow compared to other breeds.

Like many breeds, the male is larger than the female and weighs approximately nine to seventeen pounds; the females weigh anywhere from seven to twelve pounds.

American Shorthair

The American Shorthair is similar in build to that of the British Shorthair with its muscular body, round face, and short ears.

Just like the British Shorthair, the American Shorthair males are larger than the females weighing anywhere from eleven to fifteen pounds, with females weighing between six to twelve pounds.

This breed’s rate of physical development is comparable as well; usually between three and four years.

Health

British Shorthair

This breed has a life expectancy of fourteen years, but can live for as long as twenty depending on its health. Like other breeds, they are prone to a couple of health conditions.

One of these conditions is called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and is responsible for the decrease in the heart’s efficiency due to the walls of the heart’s thickening.

Cats may have this condition without displaying symptoms initially; while others may show signs, such as open-mouthed breathing and lethargy as the disease progresses.

There is no known cure for this condition, which is why genetic testing is so important.

Treatment to prolong the quality of life is usually done with medication.

British Shorthairs also have the potential to acquire polycystic kidney disease, another genetic disease characterized by many fluid-filled cysts present in the kidneys, eventually leading to their failure to function.

Symptoms can include a large abdomen, bloody urine, and lethargy. There is no cure for this disease and is treated with the use of medications.

American Shorthair

The American Shorthair has the potential to acquire hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, but other than that, these cats are a strong and healthy breed with a life expectancy of fifteen years or longer.

How to take care of British Shorthair and American Shorthair?

Grooming

British Shorthair

The British Shorthair cat sheds, but not as much when compared to other breeds. They have no undercoat which helps to keep shedding minimal.

They will benefit from brushing at least once a week. Both the British and American Shorthair are seasonal shedders.

American Shorthair

Grooming is important when owning an American Shorthair. They are moderate shedders, but shed more in the spring and fall, and require routine brushing to keep their coats healthy and maintained.

Regular nail clipping and ear care should be practiced as part of the routine grooming practice.

Nutrition

British Shorthair

Because of their laid-back disposition, the British Shorthair may be prone to gaining weight, especially as they get older.

A portion control bowl is always a good idea as opposed to dumping a vast amount of food in the bowl at once. A healthy diet; high in protein, healthy fats, and one not containing added fillers is recommended.

Check the ingredients listed on the food label and make sure that meat is the first ingredient listed.

American Shorthair

The American Shorthair has a high level of vitality and may need more carbohydrates to sustain that energy, especially if they are outside cats.

Food containing protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats such as omega-3 and omega 6 is recommended for this breed.

The Exotic Shorthair resembles that of the Persian and it’s no wonder as they were originally bred as a version of the short-haired breed.

An American breeder developed the Exotic Shorthair in the late 1950s, and was recognized as a new breed in 1966 by the Cat’s Fancier Association (CFA).

From there, this breed gained the status of grand champion in 1971 and was deemed cat of the year in 1991.

Although there are many similarities between the Exotic Shorthair and a Persian, one advantage to owning an Exotic Shorthair is that they have minimal shedding, especially when you compare the two.

Exotic Shorthair – Wikipedia

Is This Breed Hypoallergenic?

Exotic Shorthair cats are not hypoallergenic, but first, let’s look at the definition of what hypoallergenic means.

Hypoallergenic in animals means that there is less chance that a person will have an allergic reaction. This applies to both cats and dogs; the only difference with cats is that they can cause more reactions in people who are prone to allergies.

Cats have a protein called FEL d 1, which is produced in their saliva. Owners acquire this protein on their skin after petting their feline, which then induces an allergic response.

There really is no such thing as a cat that is one hundred percent hypoallergenic for this very reason. Cat dander can also lead to allergies and are usually accelerated by the FEL d 1 protein

Fel d 1 – Wikipedia

Do Exotic Shorthairs Shed?

Exotic Shorthairs are what we refer to as seasonal shedders. When fall rolls around they will shed their coat in preparation to grow their winter coat and in the summer they will shed that coat to stay cool.

Typically, they do not shed as much as compared to long hair breeds, but do in fact, shed more than some of their shorthair counterparts. It is helpful to groom an Exotic Shorthair routinely to maintain shedding.

The Coat Of An Exotic Shorthair

The coat on this breed is dense and soft with a thick undercoat. It grows to a medium length and comes in many colors, shades, and patterns.

The colors are familiar with that of the Persian with white, silver, blue, and brown being the most common.

Personality Of The Exotic Shorthair?

The Exotic Shorthair has a calm disposition. They are very affectionate and loyal to their owners. They may not have as much energy compared to other breeds but are still very playful.

They dislike being left alone and need stimulation throughout the day to keep themselves from becoming bored. Items such as scratching posts and moving cat toys can help with this.

If you are looking for a cat that will follow you around the house and sit on your lap in the evenings, then the Exotic Shorthair would be the perfect breed.

Do Exotic Shorthairs Make Good House Pets?

These cats make an impressive addition to a family. They tend to thrive as indoor pets, but would do just as well outside.

Most owners with this breed choose to have them as indoor cats to avoid potential theft as they can range in price from fifteen hundred to two thousand dollars.

If you choose to afford your Exotic Shorthair some outdoor time, an enclosed cat structure in your backyard or balcony is an option.

Weight And Lifespan

The weight of an Exotic Shorthair can range from six to thirteen pounds, with males usually weighing more than females. They have a lifespan of fifteen years and up.

Appearance

The face on this breed closely resembles that of a Persian with its flattened muzzle, large round eyes, small ears, and a massive round head in proportion to the rest of its body.

Its body is low to the ground with short legs, large round paws, and a short tail with a rounded top.

Health Conditions

Brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome

This condition causes airway abnormalities because of this breed’s flattened muzzle and short nose. This can cause inflammation in the airways, making it difficult to breathe.

Some symptoms are: noisy and open-mouth breathing, wheezing, snoring, and needing to keep the chin elevated when sleeping. Surgery is usually recommended if symptoms are severe.

Brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome – Wikipedia

Dystocia

This is a condition in mother cats and refers to a labored birth because of the large skulls of the kittens.

Contact a veterinarian if labor lasts over twenty-four hours or if the mother is having contractions lasting for over an hour without giving birth.

Feline polycystic kidney disease

This is an inherited disease leading to kidney failure due to the development of fluid-filled cysts within the kidneys.

Some symptoms are vomiting, weight loss, excessive thirst, and increased urination. Unfortunately, there is no cure and the only treatment available is through diet and medication.

The prognosis of this disease depends on the cat’s condition. Cats who have this disease should be spayed or neutered as it can be passed to their offspring.

Calcium oxalate urolithiasis

This is an accumulation of stones in the urinary tract caused by the excessive protein. Symptoms can include meowing while urinating, and an enlarged abdomen. Treatment is usually surgery to remove the stones.

Exotic Shorthair Fun Facts

  • These cats are not really large, they are just big-boned.
  • They are quiet cats.
  • They love to cuddle, and can often be found in their owner’s laps
  • Strangers refer to these cats as snobs.
  • Love to play and spend time with their owners.
  • There are two types of this breed: traditional and extreme. Traditional have longer noses and their faces are not as flat as compared to the extreme type. The extreme type has a flatter face, a shorter nose, and bigger eyes.
  • This breed is expensive, costing up to $2000
  • Garfield is a famous Exotic Shorthair cartoon character
  • This breed is one of the most popular today

Final Thought

An Exotic Shorthair is perfect for those wanting a cuddle buddy. However, like most cats, they are not recommended if you have severe allergies.

Some owners do just fine with allergy medication, while others decide that this is not the breed for them. It’s wise to consult with your doctor beforehand.

There are no scientifically proven methods to distinguish between gender in cats when looking at their face alone. However, there are many theories which suggest how to do just that, although it may be difficult to distinguish if you don’t have two cats to compare one another to.

There have been several studies, one which was published in 1999 stating that with proper training, observers may tell the gender, but that it is based upon the same relativity of that as multiple choice.

Identification of Gender in Domestic-Cat Faces with and without Training: Perceptual Learning of a Natural Categorization Task – Paul C Quinn, Vanessa Palmer, Alan M Slater, 1999 (sagepub.com)

There are distinct facial differences in some cats which are more prominent depending on their breed. Male cats are usually found to be larger than that of their counterparts. Cats vary in shape and size and without inspecting their genitals there really is no concrete way to tell whether a cat is male or female just by looking at its face, but let’s have a look at some theories.

Gender Recognition By Face, Color And Size Theories

Shape Of Face

It is said that we can note the gender of a cat in the shape of its face. Male cats are thought to have a more rounded face with bigger jowls than the opposite sex, while the females are longer in the snout than males. Of course, if you have a male and a female of two different breeds then that suggestion may differ.

Color

The color of their face and coat can sometimes help to differentiate between the two sexes. The black and orange or tri-colored calicos usually point to a female, whereas the orange and ginger colored coats suggest that of a male. This is not to say that the possibility of a female cat with an orange-colored coat doesn’t exist, it just suggests that the possibility is rare.

Size

As mentioned above, the face of a male cat is more prominent, but what about the rest of its body? Usually, a male cat will be larger than that of a female. That may differ in some cases where diet plays a role.

Realistically though, if a male and female cat of the same breed were placed on the same diet with the same amount of food, chances are the male would always come out as the winner in size.

Other Differences In Gender

There are other factors that may help in determining the sex of a cat besides the obvious.

Personality

Male cats are more affectionate to their owners than females, mostly. For some female cats who had kittens, the difference in affection likely results from the fact that they have maternal instincts which would have taken them away from their owners to care for their kittens.

Female cats are known to be more independent and don’t mind being left alone for extended periods of time. Personality really just depends on the cat and the way it was raised from birth. Personalities tend to change in both sexes once they have been spayed or neutered. A male cat who may have been aggressive and aloof may become calm and cuddly afterwards and vice versa.

Mating Tendencies

In cats who haven’t had their reproductive organs removed, males are the aggressor, especially when they sense a female in heat. The male will mark his territory with urine, telling others to back off. Females are notorious for meowing and howling through the night, alerting any males that may be around.

Territory

Male cats are known to be more territorial than males, but again it depends on the cat. Males may mark an area they believe is theirs, but some female cats can become aggressive if they feel the male is invading their space, especially if her kittens are involved.

How To Tell The Sex Of A Cat By Looking At its Genitals

The only way to get a definite answer is to examine their genitalia. Three years ago, I brought home two kittens I thought were both females. I didn’t bother to check at the time because I trusted the person I was adopting them from. That was an irresponsible move on my part as a pet owner.

However; long story short, one was a male and a few months later, I was the proud owner of a new kitty. Thankfully, she gave birth to only one kitty.. Lesson learned. So.. how do you tell the sex of a cat? It’s easy to tell the gender of a cat usually by the time they are eight weeks old.

You will need to pick up the cat and get in a comfortable spot. If it becomes agitated or anxious, you will need to stop and try again later. Some cats don’t enjoy having their tails handled, so try scratching the base of its back where the tail meets. Most cats enjoy having that area scratched and will automatically lift their tail.

Once you see the genitals, you will notice that in a male there will be an anus, scrotum and penis. The scrotum will be visible from its rear, and the anus and urinary tract will be approximately one inch apart or one-half an inch for a kitten.

Basically, when you lift the tail of a male, it should resemble two small dots placed one over the other. A female cat will have an anus and an opening that serves the urinary tract and the vulva. The vulva will have a vertical slit. The distance between this spot and the anus in females is approximately one-half inch apart.

Final Thought

Even though the best way to tell the gender of a cat is by examining their genitals, there are other ways which may suggest their sex as well. These are not always the best methods if you are looking for one hundred percent accuracy. If you are still unsure or have concerns, it is best to consult with a veterinarian. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

First, how do we know our cats are staring at us if we are sleeping? Even though we are asleep, our brains are still active.

If we are in the sleep stage known as light sleep, we can still sense slight noise and movement and can be jolted awake. And waking up to your cat staring at you will either be comforting to you or creepy.

However, have you ever wondered why they like to stare at us like that? Let’s find out today to know your cutie better.

What Happens in Your Body and Brain While You Sleep (nbcnews.com)

Reasons Your Cat May Be Staring

I can’t say I’ve ever had the experience of waking up to my cat staring at me, but I’ve heard stories from friends.

I picture my cat sitting on my nightstand, eyes glowing, his little furry torso silhouetted by the light coming from my alarm clock. I think I’d have a heart attack if I awoke to that image.

I guess it’s a good thing I don’t allow my cat in my room at night. There are many reasons your cat might stare at you while you’re sleeping, and here are a few listed below.

Cat Is Worried

Cats don’t worry the same way humans do, but they can exhibit behaviors consistent with anxiety and concern.

They show concern for their owners by meowing when they can’t see them behind a closed door and crawl into their owners’ lap when they sense they are depressed and feeling unwell.

Perhaps your cat is anxious about something and is following you everywhere throughout the house, and now you’re lying awake at night worrying about your cat.

Seriously though, if your cat has become clingy, and is suddenly wanting to sleep next to you, watching you while you sleep, it could be a sign of anxiety.

Try comforting your cat by cuddling and consult with your veterinarian to rule out any health issues.

Cat Wants Your Sleeping Spot

Most cats get used to their daily routine and spot, which they dislike to change.

Possibly, you have changed the position of his bed, have bought him a new comforter, but he hasn’t adapted yet. Or, you thought you’d try sleeping on the opposite side of your cat’s bed.

In that case, if he is staring at you, he might be waiting for you to move over. Otherwise, your cat is trying to tell you it wants its own bed.

Cat Is Protecting You

Throughout time, there have been cases in which cats have protected their owners.

Some of these documented cases have involved cats attacking intruders and snakes. Most people would think of guard animals as being a dog, but that is not always the case.

A cat will usually form an everlasting bond to the person they deem as their owner and sometimes will do just about anything to protect them.

They show their protective side through love by rubbing up against you, purring, and bringing you those unwanted gifts of prey.

Not all cats show protection in the same way. Some cats may display aggression towards other animals and people if they get too close or friendly with their owners. They can show this by hissing and growling.

In these cases you may want to contact your veterinarian for advice, otherwise, if you wake up to your cat staring at you, it may just be a feeling that it has to protect you.

3 Ways in Which Some Cats Are Protecting Humans (petful.com)

Cat Is Annoyed With You

You’re sound asleep, only to be woken up to find your cat staring directly at you, its tail swishing in the shadowy room.

Obviously, you’ve annoyed your kitty. While sleeping, your habit such as snoring too loudly or moving around might bother him. Hmm, who knows?.. your cat does.

Cat Wants Affection

In my case, when my cat wants to cuddle, he will jump up on my desk and stare at me until I offer him some. Once received enough “love”, my kitty will happily walk away until the next time.

Therefore, keep in mind that if you wake up to a staring cat, especially if it is purring and kneading, it’s most likely looking for some cuddle time.

Are There Ways To Stop My Cat From Staring?

As mentioned above, there are reasons for your cat to be staring at you during sleep. If the staring has now become a habit, it may be hard to break. However, here are a few ideas you can attempt.

Close your bedroom door at night

This may be a hard one, especially if your cat has been sleeping with you for a long period.

Try for a night or two and if your cat seems too distraught about being shut out, try training it to sleep in a bed of its own in your room.

Make Sure They Are Not Hungry

We all know what it’s like to get the midnight munchies. Keep their food and water bowls full to avoid late-night meowing.

Daytime Activity

Cat’s need excitement and stimulation during the day to fuel their energy. It’s important for their wellbeing and mental health, and will hopefully make them more restful at night.

Moving toys and puzzle food bowls are significant forms of entertainment that will keep them busy and out of trouble.

Why Isn’t My Cat Sleeping At Night?

Cats are prone to sleeping throughout the day and are most active at dawn and dusk. They are otherwise known as crepuscular animals because of their activity at these hours.

This explains the reason they want to play when you are winding down for the evening, and why they are up at the crack of dawn when all you want to do is sleep for two more hours.

If your cat’s sleeping schedule has changed, it might just be because it slept too much during the day and now its internal clock is off. There could be a few other factors why your cat isn’t sleeping at night listed below.

  • Lack of exercise during the day
  • Hungry
  • In heat
  • They are experiencing pain
  • Feeling anxious

Final Thought

Cats have such quirky personalities, but I couldn’t imagine my life without one. Sleeping with your feline companion should be a wonderful bonding experience.

However, it would be best if we could sleep well without any “uncomfortable” eye contact from your kitten at midnight.

Hopefully, you have found this article informative. Wish you and your cutie would have a sweet night together.

Keeping a cat indoors can be difficult. Every time you open the door, your cat is ready to bolt through it.

Having a fence in your backyard is a great way to keep children and animals safe, but as we all know, cats are excellent at climbing and jumping.

They are also curious and that bird flying over the fence might be all the enticement needed to check out the other side of the fence.

Why Do Cats Like Jumping Over Fences?

Cats tend to enjoy exploring, especially outside. From my experiences, I learned that cats will jump at anything resembling prey in order to catch it.

In my case, my cat spends a lot of time indoors and will jump six feet to trap a fly.

If cats explore outside of their bounds and feel safe in doing so, they usually will. If your cat goes outside, it’s best to have it spayed or neutered beforehand to prevent unwanted litter.

Male cats can smell the scent of females when they go into heat and will try jumping fences to get to her.

How High Can A Cat Jump?

How high a cat can jump relies partly on how strong the muscles in its back legs are. Every cat has a different jumping capability influenced by many factors. These factors can include:

  • Sex
  • Weight
  • Breed
  • Health
  • Motivation

How High Can Cats Jump?–Petozy

How To Stop A Cat From Jumping A Fence?

Build A Taller Fence

Building a taller fence to protect your cat from outside predators is necessary if you want your cat to have outdoor freedom. Cats have extraordinary jumping abilities from six feet, all the way up to eight feet.

Every cat is different, and if there is something on the other side of the fence that a cat is adamant about seeing, the height of the fence will not matter much as cats are avid climbers and jumpers.

Most jurisdictions state an allowance of how high a fence can stand depending on the area in which you live. Build your fence to the maximum height allowed without a ledge.

A ledge will make it easier for a cat to jump over as it gives them a place to grip and perch.

One way a ledge would serve a purpose would be to slant it at an angle and adhere the material to it that cats can’t grip with their claws such as metal sheeting or plastic.

If possible, install a cat fence deterrent such as roller bars or a cat fence enclosure which can be installed at the top of your existing fence.

Install Roller Bars

As mentioned earlier, installing roller bars on the top of an existing fence is a great way to deter your cat from jumping over it.

Roller bars make it difficult for a cat to get a foothold because they move when its paws come into contact with the rollers. They can also prevent other animals from jumping into your yard.

Cat Deterrent Fence

A fence deterrent system is another way to stop your cat from scaling the fence. It’s made from installing slanted brackets facing into your yard and applying netting to it.

This allows your cat the freedom to roam the backyard without the worry of it escaping.

Building A Catio

If a fence is not an option, there are other possibilities to allow your cat a bit of fresh air safely, such as building a catio. A catio is kind of like a patio for cats with an enclosure, and there are many ways in which to build one.

They can be small enough to fit on the outside of a window frame or large enough to fill the space of a backyard or balcony.

Catios can be made easily with supplies you would find at a home improvement or hardware store and can be built within a day depending on the size.

Can A Cat Be Trained To Stay In Its Own Yard?

Cats can not be trained as easily as dogs, and typically can only be trained up to a certain point.

That’s not to categorize all cats as being untrainable, as I’m sure there are cases in which an owner has been successful in doing so.

Cats are independent animals.

Although you may train them to come when called, or have their utmost attention outside when you are present. They will wander around if given the chance, either from curiosity or boredom.

Can Cats Be Leashed Outside

Cats can be leash trained, although it will take time for them to get used to the idea of it.

For walking purposes and short times in the yard, it is perfectly fine. However, cats should never be on a leash outside for an extended amount of time unattended, as they pose a choking hazard by entanglement.

Other Exits Cat May Find

Cats are notorious problem solvers.

Once you have cat-proofed your fence, there may be other areas in your yard that may need attending to. Check the bottom perimeter of the fence for any spots in which your cat may crawl under.

On the other hand, check for larger than normal gaps between each board as cats seem able to crawl through the tightest of spots.

If you have trees near the fence, look at ways to deter your cat from climbing to avoid them from escaping.

One deterrent that works for some owners is a slanted cone placed approximately six feet up on the trunk of the tree and covered in chicken wire.

Tree guards can be made from any material that a cat can’t grip onto with its claws, such as metal. This will deter the cat from climbing.

Final Thought

There are things you can do to help prevent your cat from jumping over the fence. What you do depends on the ability and motivational aspect of your cat.

Some cat owners have to face the fact that no matter what we do, our cat will always find a way under or over the fence. However, keeping our cats kept is a way to protect them from potential threats.

Cats have weird tendencies: bringing us unwanted hunting gifts, tearing through the house and acting crazy at bedtime, either squishing themselves into small spaces, or licking everything in sight.

Over than those, cats spend a lot of time licking themselves to keep clean, and for some, it’s almost an obsession.

Although it’s common for cats to be curious and check things out by licking them, it may be a cause for concern if the cat is excessively licking items such as plastic, cement, fabric, and wood.

Specifically, once your cat is constantly licking the floor, it could result from many reasons.

Reasons My Cat May Be Licking The Floor

It happens every time in your daily life with cats. When you’re in the kitchen preparing a meal, and the cat comes running hoping you will drop a tasty crumb or two onto the floor.

As soon as you do, your cat pounces on it like it’s alive and quickly devours it, then wait patiently for more.

Reasons your cat may lick the floor:

  • The scent of food still on the floor. Maybe you dropped the food before, and its scent is still on the floor. They think there is food for them, so they lick to be ready to eat that.
Cats have a powerful sense of smell and can pick up scents for days if an area has not been cleaned properly. Although we may not smell a lingering scent, a cat can, because of their olfactory epithelium. This is the tissue found in the nasal cavity responsible for our sense of smell. A cat’s olfactory epithelium much larger than humans, which offers them the ability to smell items at a rate of sixteen times more than we ever could.

  • Behavioral disorders. Behavioral disorders in cats can be displayed in many ways. Licking the floor and other surfaces could be signs of stress and anxiety. If this behavior is allowed to continue, it may develop into an obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  • Heath conditions. Medical conditions of a cat such as pica, diet deficiencies, diabetes, and hypothyroidism may all be contributing factors leading to why a cat is licking the floor.
  • Thirsty. Cats that lick concrete or ceramic flooring could be showing signs of thirst as these types of flooring will sometimes form condensation.

Cat senses – Wikipedia

Could Licking The Floor Make My Cat Sick?

Some cats are more sensitive to chemicals and other substances found in flooring products. Prolonged exposure to some of these harmful chemicals can cause irritation in the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Although hardwood flooring isn’t toxic in its natural state, once it’s sealed with a protective finish, it can emit a chemical compound called volatile organic compounds which can be released for years in small amounts.

Laminate flooring can also cause symptoms because of the adhesive, which is used to bond the top layer to the pressed wood.

Toxins found in the adhesive and the top layer of laminate can consist of formaldehyde, aluminum oxide, and others. Exposure to these chemicals can cause allergic reactions, breathing problems and have the potential risk of causing cancer.

Carpeting can contain chemicals usually infused into the carpet during the manufacturing process. These chemicals help in combating mites, mold, and bacteria.

However, if you have a cat that enjoys licking the carpet, watch for symptoms such as breathing problems, dizziness, vomiting, and weakness.

Consult with your veterinarian if you think your cat may have come into contact with any of these harmful substances.

If you’re thinking of replacing your existing floors, the safest options for your family and pets are genuine wood sealed with a natural sealer, polished concrete, natural carpet, and tiles.

How To Stop Your Cat From Licking The Floor?

There are a few methods you can try in hopes that your cat will stop licking the floor. However, if you have concerns, a trip to the vet may be warranted to rule out any health issues.

Clean The Surfaces

If your cat seems to have a favorite area of the floor to lick, focus solely on that spot.

Change your cleaning product if you find your cat still licking that area of the floor after you’ve cleaned it.

Try mixing equal parts of water and hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle. Spray the area, let it sit for five minutes, and wipe with a clean rag. This should rid the area of any food scents left behind.

Some other products recommended are vinegar and citrus-scented cleaning products.

Redirect Your Cats Attention

Cats are habitual creatures. Licking the floor may have been brought on by a scent and then developed into a habit thereafter.

If you notice your cat in the act, try redirecting by stimulating it with some new toys to play with. A cat water fountain is also a great option if possible to keep it focused on other things.

Does My Cat Have A Health Problem if it licks the floor often?

Growing up, I had a cat with a habit of licking plastic bags, shower curtains, and leather. Turns out, the vet diagnosed him with a condition called pica.

Pica is defined as eating, chewing, and licking anything that is non-food-related. It is classed as a compulsive behavioral problem in cats and can lead to gastrointestinal distress.

If your cat is addicted to licking the floor, contact your veterinarian to rule out this condition. Causes of pica in cats can sometimes be related to:

  • Diabetes
  • Anemia
  • Immunodeficiency Viruses
  • Dental Disease
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Anxiety

Non-medical conditions may trigger pica in some cats and can include:

Boredom

Pica can become worse when bored and used as a way to self-soothe.

Lonely

If your cat feels rejected, it may continue to exhibit pica behavior.

Grief

Cats may resort to unwanted behavior such as licking floors and other objects if they experience a loss of a close family member or a pet sibling.

Stress

Any type of stress can provoke pica. From moving to another city, adopting a new pet, loud noises or visitors.

Treatment Methods For Pica In Cats

Every cat experiencing this condition will probably be treated differently depending on the cause of pica.

Redirection

Play with your cat or redirect it to a favorite toy.

Stimuli

Cat grass is a safe alternative. New toys, and puzzle food bowls are all great ways to keep your cat busy doing fun things.

Reduce stress

A white noise machine may be beneficial for your cat if it has separation anxiety. Introduce visitors and other pets slowly.

Medications

If all other attempts have failed, your veterinarian may prescribe anxiety medication which has been proven to help with pica in some cats.

Final Thought

Redirection is all that might be required to curb your cat’s problem of licking the floor. Tune into your cat’s needs and if all else fails, take a trip to the vet to ensure the health of your feline companion.

The post Can My Cat Give Me Worms If It Sleeps In My Bed? appeared first on AZ Cat.

]]>
If your cat has worms and sleeps with you, the probability of contracting worms is minimal but not impossible. Worm eggs are transferred through feces and can end up being a vicious cycle in cats that go undetected.

Thankfully, owners know when their cats are not themselves and a round or two of worm medication will solve that problem.

If a cat has worms, it can transmit the eggs to its fur through grooming.

And, the only way you could become infected is if you were to come into contact with the eggs that may have fallen off your cat’s fur and onto your hands.

Therefore, if you accidentally touch your mouth during this time, you could inadvertently transfer those eggs to yourself.

The eggs would then hatch in your intestinal tract and you would end up with worms. Sounds gross, but don’t worry, there’s medication for us humans too.

Keep your cat out of your bed until it’s been cleared of worms and don’t forget to launder your sheets.

What Are Worms?

Worms are parasites that live in the intestines. They feed on the nutrients and blood from within the intestinal walls and can lead to health issues if left untreated.

Depending on the type of worm, they can range in size from one inch to twenty-four inches long and can vary in shape and color.

How Do Cats Get Worms?

Worms are highly contagious between pets through their feces, but there are other ways in which they may have contracted these nasty parasites.

  • Eating infected prey
  • Infested with worm by fleas
  • Serving your cat raw meat, which could be infected with worms
  • Kittens can contract worms through their mother’s milk

How To Best Launder Your Bedding?

If your cat sleeps in your bed and you’ve discovered that it has worms, you will need to launder your sheets just to be on the safe side.

Remove the sheets carefully to avoid distributing any worm eggs elsewhere which may be present. Wash your sheets on high heat and follow with the same in the dryer.

You can use a laundry disinfectant found in most grocery and hardware stores.

Otherwise, you can make your own by placing one-half of a cup of vinegar in the detergent tray and one-half of a cup of baking soda sprinkled over your bedding before hitting the wash cycle.

It’s recommended not to use the detergents at the same time or your bedding could come out with an oily feel. Vacuum your mattress and steam clean if possible as the heat will kill any missed worm eggs.

Will Worms I Get From My Cat Make Me Sick?

Depending on the type of worm contracted, there is a possibility that you could become ill if left untreated.

For instance, if a child frequently contracts hookworm, there is a risk for impaired mental development because of a lack of iron and protein that the worms are feeding on.

As for illnesses in adults, symptoms may vary depending on the parasitic strain and severity. These symptoms include:

  • Distended abdomen
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Itchy skin rash, indicating ringworm
  • Vomiting
  • Lethargy
  • A general feeling of unwell

Hookworm Infections: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments (healthline.com)

How To Avoid Contracting Worms From Your Cat?

The best preventative measure to avoid contracting worms from your cat is to wash your hands often, especially if your cat has been diagnosed or suspected of having worms.

Wash each time after petting your cat or cleaning its litter box. Keep other surfaces that your cat frequents clean as well.

Worm eggs can be present in soil distributed by outdoor cats, so it’s always wise to wear gloves or wash your hands during and after gardening and check your child’s sandbox for cat feces.

Protecting Your Cat From Worms

If you have an inside cat, the risk of it contracting worms is minimal compared to one that goes outside. However, if you are feeding your indoor cat raw meat, then the risk would increase.

Outdoor cats can contract worms by consuming mice, birds, and other prey. Keep your cat separated from other animals if possible to avoid infecting them as well.

Have other animals in your home tested for worms, as they are easily transmitted through grooming each other and litter boxes.

Other ways in which to protect your cat, other animals, and yourself from worms are:

  • Keep your home clean
  • Wash your cat’s bedding routinely
  • Test your cat’s feces periodically
  • If you have an outside cat, use a flea preventative, as they can transmit worms to cats
  • Treat any worm infections promptly. The sooner your cat is administered medication, the easier it will be to control an infestation

Types Of Worms That Cats Typically Get

Roundworms

Roundworms are the most common worms found in cats. They can measure up to five inches, are white and have a spaghetti-like appearance.

Tapeworms

These worms are white and flat. They can grow up to several inches and break off into segments.

Hookworms

The eggs of hookworms are undetectable to the human eye, with the worms appearing as thin as a strand of hair, less than one inch long.

Ringworm

Although no worm is present with this condition, I thought it wise to mention as it is a highly contagious fungal infection. The name comes from its appearance, which is characterized by a red, ring-like rash on the skin and scalp and can cause itchiness and hair loss.

Lungworm

Lungworms are not as common but can still pose a threat to cats, and as the name suggests, they live in the lungs. A symptom of this parasite in cats is a cough.

Final Thought

Sleeping with your kitty can comfort both you and your feline companion. Disrupting this routine for any reason can be stressful, let alone the prospect of worms.

As mentioned earlier, the risk of contracting worms is low, but still there. Take the necessary precautions, speak to your veterinarian and your doctor if you have concerns.

When caught early, the potential for transmission is diminished, preventing you and others from becoming infected.

Cats love the outdoors. They tend to stay outside for hours on those nice sunny days and come back home like clockwork, thanks to their excellent sense of time.

Their body has an amazing rhythm called the circadian. Simply put, the circadian rhythm is a natural process that regulates the sleep and wake patterns in the brain, governed by the rising and setting of the sun.

Meanwhile, cats are very in tune with this process so they would know when to come home.

However, if your cat doesn’t come home as usual, it can bring on a sense of anxiety making you fear that the worst has happened.

Once your cat finally reappears and looks a little disheveled, it is. That is the time to think about how to prevent your cat from evading you again.

How To Care For Your Cat When It Returns Home

Feed Your Cat

Depending on how long your cat was absent, it may or may not be hungry.

Monitor your cat to ensure that he is not just wolfing down the food as eating too quickly could cause your cat to be sick. Note that freshwater needs to be available.

Check For Cuts And Wounds

Check for any open wounds and inspect its fur for fleas and ticks. You can inspect for ticks by running your hands through its fur to feel for abnormalities.

If ticks are present, you might notice a bumpy feel in their fur. You can remove the ticks yourself, or have a veterinarian do it.

Either way, make sure you save the ticks in an enclosed container and have them checked for lyme disease. Your veterinarian will advise on how to do this. If possible.

Bathe Your Cat

Bathe your cat using a mild shampoo, baby shampoo will work fine. Use a comb while bathing to check for fleas.

The water and shampoo will kill any live fleas, but a veterinarian will probably suggest using a topical flea control solution usually applied to the back of the neck.

This treatment will need to occur once every month for at least three months to be successful at killing any unseen fleas.

Monitor Your Cat

Monitor your cat over the next few days for any behavioral and eating disorders. Any change could signify a health concern brought on by whatever ensued while your cat went missing.

You might want to check your cat’s feces in case it was exposed to worms from anything they may have eaten.

Behavioral changes could be a sign of pain, fear, or anxiety. Your cat may have experienced a traumatic event while missing and just needs time and a little TLC to help it recover.

Spay Or Neuter

If your cat hasn’t been spayed or neutered, he may have a tendency to roam again.

Spayed and neutered cats have a longer life expectancy, no unwanted litters, are less likely to develop cancer, and are typically more well-behaved.

Microchip Your Cat

Microchipping your cat is a much better alternative to a collar and name tag. This tiny device will not prevent your kitty from becoming lost, but it will help it in being found if someone finds it and takes it to the vet.

A microchip is a tiny electronic device twelve millimeters long that is usually implanted between the shoulder blades of a cat using a syringe.

The microchip stores a number which can be seen with a scanner found at a veterinarian’s office and pet shelters.

They link the number to a database containing the owner’s pertinent information so the owner and pet can be reunited again.

Build An Outside Fence Or Enclosure

Now that your cat is back home, you will need to decide on whether you want to allow your cat the freedom to roam the neighborhood again.

If you like you keep your cat inside but still give it an option of enjoying the fresh air, then perhaps a fence or a cat enclosure would work.

If you decide on a fence, make sure it’s built at a proper height of at least six feet, so it does not entice your cat to jump over it. You will also need to cat-proof the top of the fence by using either roller bars or netting.

A cat enclosure is a great option if you can not build a fence. You can build it as a temporary or permanent structure, and they can range in size depending on your yard and needs.

Materials for an enclosure can easily be found at any hardware or home improvement store and can usually be built over the course of a weekend.

Why Do Cats Wander Away?

There are many reasons a cat might wander off. Here are just a few listed below.

  • A cat may wander off to look for a mate if it is not neutered or spayed.
  • Curiosity gets the better of some cats, and they may have wandered off to check something out.
  • A cat might become disoriented if it wanders too far away.
  • Injuries
  • Cats are nosy. They may enter an opened building, only to find it shut when they want to leave.
  • Cats may get bored with their surroundings and wander off to find something more appealing.
  • Chasing prey
  • Another animal or person chased it away

Tips On Finding A Lost Cat

There’s nothing more excruciating than the thought of never seeing your beloved cat again. Here are a few tips in helping you locate your missing feline.

  • Distribute fliers with your cats picture and contact information
  • Check trees in and around your property, as cats like to hide in high places
  • Alert your neighbors to be on the lookout
  • Shake the treat jar
  • Call for your cat
  • Place your cat’s bed or blanket outside. Cats have an excellent sense of smell and may find their way back with a familiar scent.
